Modeling the Effects of Mold Topography on Aluminum Cast Surfaces
نویسندگان
چکیده
The air-gap nucleation time, the stress evolution and the solid shell growth pattern are examined for different mold topographies to illustrate the potential control of aluminum cast surface morphologies during the early stages of solidification using proper design of mold topographies. The interaction between heat transfer and deformation during the early stages of solidification is considered in this work. Simulation results show that a sinusoidal mold surface with a smaller wavelength leads to an earlier nucleation of air-gaps. In addition, the unevenness in the solid-shell growth pattern decreases faster for a smaller wavelength. Such studies can be used to tune mold surfaces for control of cast surface morphologies.

A thermomechanical study of the effects of mold topography on the solidification of Aluminum alloys
A thermomechanical study of the effects of mold topography on the solidification of Aluminum alloys at early times is provided. The various coupling mechanisms between the solid-shell and mold deformation and heat transfer at the mold/solid-shell interface during the early stages of Aluminum solidification on molds with uneven topographies are investigated. Production of aluminum matrix composites is widespread because these material provide enhanced mechanical properties compared to aluminum. One the most important parameters of metal matrix composite production is uniform distribution of reinforcing nanoparticles in matrices using the stir-casting method. Second is ensuring high wettability, which is determined by evaluating the properties of ma...
متن کاملEFFECT OF THE INCLINED COOLING PLATE CHARACTERISTICS ON THE THIXOTROPIC MICROSTRUCTURE OF A356.0 ALUMINUM ALLOY
In the present work microstructural evolution of A356 Aluminum alloy using an inclined cooling plate casting process for thixoforming feedstock production is investigated. The resultant microstructure was evaluated and compared with those of the same alloy produced by the conventional casting process, i.e. directly cast in the same mold without using an inclined cooling plate. It was found that...

متن کاملA Control System Analysis of a Direct-Chill Cast Process of Aluminum Ingots by an Inverse Measured Method
Abstract: A direct-chill (DC) cast process of an aluminum ingot of size 3200×1292×320 mm is analyzed numerically by the analysis of a fixed controlled system. The study investigates the DC processes in which liquid aluminum is cooling continuously in mold and then with water spray at the exit of mold. An inverse method is applied to measure heat transfer coefficient on water cooling surface exp...
